Start doing mathematics with Mathematica in three steps

Everyone at North Carolina State University already has access to Wolfram Mathematica through the university. Get it installed, open the training notebook, and run your first symbolic and numerical computations on your own laptop.

Your three steps

Do them in order: install Mathematica, download the notebook, then run it.

  1. Get Mathematica with your @ncsu.edu email

    1. Go to wolfram.com/siteinfo.
    2. Enter your NC State email address (yourname@ncsu.edu).
    3. Tick the box to agree to Wolfram's Privacy Policy, then click Continue.
    4. On the "North Carolina State University Has Access to Wolfram Products" page, find Wolfram Mathematica and click Download for desktop.
    5. Sign in or create a Wolfram ID with your @ncsu.edu email when prompted, then download and install Mathematica.

Screen recording: entering an ncsu.edu email on wolfram.com/siteinfo, ticking the privacy box, clicking Continue, and reaching the North Carolina State University product page with the Download for desktop button.

Mathematica through the NC State site license is for current NC State students, faculty and staff, for teaching, learning and academic research.

  2. Download the training notebook

Open Wolfram Language for Mathematics Computation, a 12-slide introduction to doing mathematics symbolically and numerically. In the gray bar at the top of the page, click Download to save the notebook file (General-Math-with-Wolfram-Language.nb) to your computer.

    What's inside:

    • Algebra & calculus
    • Solving equations & inequalities
    • Recurrence equations
    • Linear algebra & matrix decompositions
    • SVD data compression
    • 2D, 3D & complex plots
    • Quantum tunneling
    • ODEs & PDEs
    • Finite element method
    • Fluid flow simulation
  3. Open it in Mathematica and run it yourself

    1. Open the downloaded .nb file in desktop Mathematica (double-click it, or use File › Open).
    2. Click into any input cell and press Shift+Enter to run it. Work through the slides in order.
    3. Change an equation, a matrix, a boundary condition or a plot range and run the cell again. Changing things is the fastest way to learn.

Some slides solve PDEs numerically, so a cell may take a few seconds to finish.

Need help? We'll come to you

  • Office hours: If you get stuck or want to go further, we'll schedule a Zoom office hour for you or your group.
  • At your club, class or lab meeting: We can join and walk everyone through these steps and the training notebook live.

When you're ready for more

Wolfram Language for Math goes further, with examples closer to research: recent research done with Wolfram Language, surface, vector and density visualization, graphs and networks, mesh regions and quick combinatorics.

Each orange heading is a closed section. Click the small » arrow next to a heading to open it. The same Download button is in the gray bar at the top, so you can save the notebook and run it in Mathematica.
