There have been a couple of powerful solar flares over the last 48 hours. To see the spikes in the solar X-ray output, we plot of the X-ray data feed (see below).
Both flares triggered coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that are Earth-directed. The second one is moving faster than the first and could result in a “cannibal” CME where the second one catches up to and combines with the first.
They are due to arrive tonight or tomorrow. Of course if its cloudy, it would ruin your chances of seeing anything. And, the orientation of the magnetic field of the plasma approaching us can’t be measured until it arrives. It could compliment the Earth’s magnetic field, strengthening it and preventing the plasma from hitting the atmosphere. Or it could be oriented opposite the Earth’s magnetic field, weakening it and allowing more plasma to hit the atmosphere causing it to glow.
Until it arrives, its hard to know if we will have a nice aurora show or nothing and also depends on clouds.
First fetch solar X-ray data (both short and long wavelengths) from a space weather resource, covering the period from November 10, 2025, to the present.
