When two objects at different temperatures are brought into contact, heat flows from the hotter one to the other until the temperature is the same in both, and the objects are said to be in thermal equilibrium. The length of an arrow represents the velocity of a molecule; the sum of the lengths is proportional to the total thermal energy of the object.
