Separation of Abietic Acid from Other Acids Using a Fractional Extraction System

fractional extraction setup
This Demonstration studies the separation of abietic acid (component B) from other acids (component A) using a fractional extraction system.
Solvent 1 (see setup) is pure heptane and enters at
1000kg/hr
, while solvent 2 is pure methyl cellosolve and 10% water flowing at
2500kg/hr
. Solvents 1 and 2 are assumed completely immiscible.
The feed is composed of 5% weight abietic acid in solvent 2. The feed flow rate is 1 kg/hr.
Set the percent recovery of abietic acid in the bottom stream and the Demonstration will compute the total number of stages as well as the optimum feed stage location.
