A Roots blower is a rotary blowing machine with two meshing rotors turning in opposite directions. The rotors are cycloidal gears with two to six lobes, each with an epicycloidal and a hypocycloidal section. Air moves through the blower as it is trapped in the cavities between the rotors and the housing.
Patented by the Roots brothers in 1860, these blowers are still used as superchargers for internal combustion engines.
