Nucleation Rates for Cd-Se Nanoparticles
Nucleation Rates for Cd-Se Nanoparticles
Semiconducting Cd-Se nanoparticles have become an active area of research in recent years due to, among other reasons, their size-dependent light emission properties. These nanoparticles can be grown in laboratories and fine-tuned to exhibit desired optical and energy-absorbing properties. This Demonstration shows how these nucleation conditions can be altered by varying the parameters of temperature and composition in crystalline media. The nucleation rate is given by the equation:

By manipulating the nucleation conditions, particularly temperature , surface free energy , and supersaturation , researchers can create measurable differences in nucleation rate and better control the number of crystal nuclei in the media. The graphic at the lower right gives a rough sketch of the nucleation process, measured in arbitrary units (au).
