Non-logarithmic Slide Rule

This Demonstration illustrates multiplication by two non-logarithmic slide rules.
In the first case, define
Δ(x)=x(x+1)/2
. Then
Δ(a)-Δ(a-b)+Δ(b-1)=ab
. This slide rule has the four scales
a
,
a-b
,
b
, and
a×b
.
In the second case, define
Δ(x)=
2
x
/2
. Then
Δ(a)-Δ(a-b)+Δ(b)=ab
. This slide rule has the four scales:
a
,
a-b
,
b
, and
a×b
, but
a-b
and
b
can be considered the same.
When
ab
, read
a×b
on the bottom scale below
b
on the
b
scale.
