In image processing, the morphological operations depend on the structural element used. The dilation operation makes objects larger based on the structuring element's radius. On the other hand, the erosion operation makes objects smaller. The morphological closing operation is basically dilation followed by an erosion operation. It smooths out boundaries, joins narrow boundaries, and fills small holes caused by noise. The opening operation performs erosion followed by dilation. It is used to remove small objects, while closing removes small holes. All these techniques are used find specific shapes in an image.
