Laminar flow is the nonturbulent motion of a fluid in layers. Planar laminar motion can be illustrated by pushing the top of a closed book sideways; the bottom does not move and the top shows the maximum motion. In the case of a tube, the velocity of the flow near the walls is the minimum due to friction. Newton's formula for viscosity is based on laminar flow.
