Three pairs of extendable cylinders are placed at right angles to one another, so that there is one cylinder for each face of a cube. Putting a square at the end of each cylinder gives an expanding cube mechanism. Other shapes may be placed at the ends of the cylinders instead of squares to give a rhombic dodecahedron (rd), a pentagonal dodecahedron (dod), or a rhombic triacontahedron (rt).
