This Demonstration calculates the enthalpies and entropies for a real gas over a range of temperatures, relative to a reference state at a selected pressure, using the Peng–Robinson equation of state and ideal-gas heat capacities. You can vary the pressure with the slider and select "argon", "benzene", or "carbon dioxide". You can view either the entropy or enthalpy functions of each gas compared to an ideal gas. The departure function can also be plotted for each selection. In thermodynamics, a departure function for a thermodynamic property is defined as the difference between the observed value and the value computed for an ideal gas. Select "compare all" to view plots of enthalpy or entropy departure functions for all three gases at 10 MPa over a wide range of temperatures. The departure functions in this plot are shown only above the critical temperature for each gas. Click "show labels" to associate each molecule with a curve.
