A mixture of
n
-hexane and
n
-octane are in vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) in a cylinder fitted with a piston. More of either component can be added to the system, which then reestablishes an equilibrium at constant temperature and pressure. The vapor-liquid equilibrium is modeled by Raoult's law. Total moles in the liquid phase (
L
n
) and vapor phase (
V
n
) are displayed, as well as the mole fraction of
n
-hexane in the liquid phase (
x
H
) and the vapor phase (
y
H
). The saturation pressure of
n
-hexane (
sat
P
H
) is higher than that of
n
-octane (
sat
P
O
). The
P

y
diagram represents the behavior shown by the piston-cylinder. When changing conditions, click the reset button before clicking the "inject isothermally" play button.
