Adding One Component to a Binary Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium (VLE) Mixture
Adding One Component to a Binary Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium (VLE) Mixture
A mixture of -hexane and -octane are in vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) in a cylinder fitted with a piston. More of either component can be added to the system, which then reestablishes an equilibrium at constant temperature and pressure. The vapor-liquid equilibrium is modeled by Raoult's law. Total moles in the liquid phase () and vapor phase () are displayed, as well as the mole fraction of -hexane in the liquid phase () and the vapor phase (). The saturation pressure of -hexane () is higher than that of -octane (). The -- diagram represents the behavior shown by the piston-cylinder.
