This Demonstration shows how a five-gear manual transmission works. The buttons represent different gear positions and the wheel changes rotational speed accordingly. This is because the gear positions lock the different gears onto the drive shaft and the drive shaft takes on the speed of the gear that it is locked onto.

Details

The "show teeth" option removes the spokes on the gears and replaces them with actual teeth on the edges. The "more spokes" option places more spokes on the wheel.
