This Demonstration calculates the Fresnel coefficients of reflection for metals. Light travels through air and is incident on the metal. You can vary the real and imaginary parts (extinction coefficient)
n
and
κ
of the index of refraction of the metal. These determine the amplitude of reflection, the reflectance and the induced phase changes upon reflection as functions of the angle of incidence (AOI). A reference table showing the index of refraction for four metals is also provided.
