This project was part of a Data Science module, taught by Jozsef Konczer at Milestone Institute. For anyone interested in some materials here is a GITHUB.

There are a lot of things to consider when we decide which universities to apply to.
Using existing online data sets, I have collected some information which can be changed into your preferred ones, hoping that with them everyone can gain some deeper insights into the culture and style of universities in certain countries.

Since everyone looks at different properties when considering universities, I have placed the information in different sections, so you can choose what interests you.

◼
First, we need to know which universities are in the data set.
According to the data published by AUBSP (updated in April 2023), there are more than 29,257 universities in the world, but for this project, the 28,709 universities collected here are also satisfactory.

As an example, here are the universities in the UK:

More details about the universities in a certain country (the Netherlands)
The education system in each country may not be so different, so it may be useful to sort them by country.The basic information you can get based on the country can contain the following: - location of the university and the population of the city/town - the official website - population of the university - whether it is research or art focused - enrolments for undergraduates, graduates and the university as a whole - accrediting agency
For example, here is a table of universities in the Netherlands:

First, we may want to know which universities are included and what properties can we find information about:

The number of universities there are in some chosen countries

The idea here is that everyone can search for the countries they are interested in, for example let’s look at these:
Here is a chart showing the numbers:

It can be essential to know what cultural differences exist between countries, one of the interesting ways doing it is to look at their mottos, here are some word clouds showing how often a particular word appears in university mottos in the chosen country.
Spain
Spain
It is quite an interesting one, for Spain there is no word standing out:
China
China
For China, it is innovation, but other words are all playing similar importance here:
Germany
Germany
For Germany it is also knowledge, followed by light and wisdom:
US
US
In the US the future is the most used one, but tradition, knowledge and truth are also quite common here:
UK
UK
Finally for the UK, it is research:
Summary:
Summary:
We can learn a lot of facts about things we sometimes ignore. For example, by analysing the mottos of certain universities and countries, we can learn what they care about most:
◼
World : knowledge;
◼
Hungary : knowledge;
◼
Spain : no "specific keywords";
◼
China : innovation;
◼
Germany : knowledge;
◼
USA : future;
◼
UK : research;
Conclusion
Conclusion
However, this is not a complete study as we do not have a complete list of universities and the amount of information we have varies from country to country, so this is only a brief summary for reference purposes.
