Pulsars

Pulsars are collapsed stars with strong magnetic fields (purple) that are tilted with respect to the rotation axis (blue). Radiation jets (gray) directed along the magnetic poles sweep through space and if a jet sweeps by Earth we detect a pulse of radiation.
