Beads only count when at the center. Those at the bottom are worth one unit and those at the top are worth five units. From right to left, the columns represent ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and ten thousands.

Details

The abacus can be considered one of the world's first calculators. Interestingly enough, different ancient civilizations developed unique styles of the abacus. Even today, people are creating new kinds of abaci.
