The standard map describes a universal, generic behavior of area-preserving maps with divided phase space in which integrable islands of stability are surrounded by chaotic regions. Orbits of the Chirikov standard map are generated by iterating the map
n
times using different initial points. Two orbits are plotted initially; you can add or delete new ones with Alt+Click in the graphic. Three different orbit colors are used cyclically, so that a surface of sections on the map are apparent.
