Sine-Gaussian Signals
Sine-Gaussian Signals
This Demonstration shows examples of sine-Gaussian waves, which are sine wave signals modulated by a Gaussian envelope. These are characterized by the signal's central frequency and the ratio of central frequency to bandwidth (quality factor) .

For a time-frequency search for statistically significant excess signal energy, sine-Gaussians are the natural choice as templates. They have the minimum error uncertainty in the time-frequency domain. Sine-Gaussian signal analysis has been applied to the detection of gravitational-wave bursts. In this Demonstration, the shapes of such signals are shown for different values of the frequency and quality factor.
