Do you know what the most common mechanical device people use to get to work is? You guessed it: the elevator. Here is an illustration of how a traditional elevator works. Since the weight of the counterbalance is comparable to the weight of the actual elevator, it takes very little force by a motor (not shown) to move the elevator up and down. The only force the motor has to overcome when lifting the elevator is the friction in the rope.
