Thermal Motion in a Solid
In the classical model of a solid, atoms occupy fixed points in a crystal lattice and oscillate randomly around their equilibrium positions. The average amplitude of the oscillations increases with the total thermal energy of the solid. In this Demonstration, small arrows show these displacements.
