Perimeter of 3-by-4 Multi-Loop Lissajous Structure
Authors: Housam Binous and Ahmed Bellagi

We compute the perimeter of a 3-by-4 multi-loop Lissajous structure using two different approaches: (1) the parametric definition of the Lissajous curve is defined and (2) Arc-length continuation (numerical differential approach).Method 1: Based on parametric definition of the Lissajous curveThe 3-by-4 multi-loop Lissajous structure is defined by:
x(t)=cos(3t)
and
y(t)=sin(4t)
The exact perimeter is given by:
P=
t
1
∫
t
0
2
x
t
+
2
y
t
dt
where:
t
1
=0 and
t
2
=2π
.or equivalently
P=
2π
∫
0
9Sin
2
(3t)
+16
2
Cos(4t)
dt
Method 2: Arc-Length Continuation MethodThe second approach is based on the definition of arc length, where the perimeter is computed as the total length of a parametric curve. To do so, we use the following implict equation structure:
x=4
3
u
-3u
and
2
y
